A Note of Gratitude After the UDA Webinar 2025 Vol. 1 of 4 with Denise Burt

Thank you to all attendees. We appreciate the new friends curious about the topic and the meeting. It’s wonderful to see familiar faces, including UDA President Professor Zhao Zhiyong, Vice President Professor Yao Xupeng, UDA President Emerita Professor Kelly Salchow MacArthur, Professor Dou Xiang, Professor Simone Huetlin, and Icograda President Melike Tascioglu Vaughan. Lastly, we thank Vice President Professor Jurgen Hefele for hosting the webinar.

We shared our thoughts freely in a UDA manner during our meeting, without boundaries or prejudice. UDA continues to strengthen the communication and graphic design disciplines by conducting many outstanding activities worldwide with professionals, professors, and students.

Copenhagen-based graphic designer Denise Burt has been on a unique discovery of contemporary classical music through her work designing covers for hundreds of art music releases over the last 20 years.

In this webinar she will share some personal stories of the design process behind a selection of her album designs. “What interests me is the challenge of finding a way to represent and communicate conceptual music to audiences. It’s the ultimate design task to try to make someone understand something about a piece of music before they have heard it.”

About presenter
Denise Burt is an independent graphic designer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has designed over 300 album covers since 2003 for a wide range of international artists both new and well-established – including many Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winning composers and ensembles.
In 2015, she published her book, ‘Seeing New Music’, telling the stories behind the creation of 24 CD covers. The Guardian’s Tom Service wrote, “Burt’s thoughtfulness, imagination and visual variety is an insight into what can happen when label, composer and artist are working in creative synergy”, while Eye Magazine noted, “Burt’s graphics respond to the radical nature of the music within ... with a visual shorthand that promises a sensual, emotional experience as well as an intellectual one”.

The UDA proudly recognizes outstanding individuals

The UDA proudly recognizes outstanding individuals with its prestigious UDA Medallions, which celebrate transformative leadership and significant contributions to education and practice. These esteemed medallions are essential to the UDA's permanent collection and exemplify excellence in the field.

We are pleased to announce that Yawei Zhang (China) has been nominated as the recipient of the 2024 UDA Medallion. Congratulations to him on this well-deserved honor!

Yawei Zhang holds a BFA in Product Design from the University of Oregon, USA. He is also a lecturer at the Esslinger Strategic Design Studio at the Shanghai Institution of Visual Arts College of Fudan University. He has won several prestigious international and domestic product design awards, including the Red Dot Award, A Design Award, Golden Pin Design Award, and IDSA International Design Award. 2018, he was also awarded the China Design Imagination Award - Most Popular Designer of The Year. Previously worked as a product and visual designer for well-known sports brands Nike and Adidas. He is now the co-founder of WY&P Holistic Design Consultancy and is recognized as a member of the Forbes Global Alliance in 2022. He holds multiple personal invention patents, new utility model patents, and appearance patents.

Paul J. Nini is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Design at Ohio State University, retiring in 2024 after 33 years of service in roles including Department Chairperson, Graduate Studies Chair, Undergraduate Studies Chair, and Visual Communication Design program Coordinator. He’s also taught as a Visiting Lecturer at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of Cincinnati.

Paul’s writings have appeared in numerous publications (via AIGA, Allworth Press, Bloomsbury, de.Mo, Design Issues, Eye (UK), ico-D, Information Design Journal, and Princeton Architectural Press). He has presented at various national and international design and education conferences. He is a former member of AIGA’s Design Educators Community Steering Committee. He has also served on the editorial board of Communication Design: Interdisciplinary and Graphic Design Research and on the advisory board for AIGA’s Dialectic journal.
