The UDA proudly recognizes outstanding individuals

The UDA proudly recognizes outstanding individuals with its prestigious UDA Medallions, which celebrate transformative leadership and significant contributions to education and practice. These esteemed medallions are essential to the UDA's permanent collection and exemplify excellence in the field.

We are pleased to announce that Yawei Zhang (China) has been nominated as the recipient of the 2024 UDA Medallion. Congratulations to him on this well-deserved honor!

Yawei Zhang holds a BFA in Product Design from the University of Oregon, USA. He is also a lecturer at the Esslinger Strategic Design Studio at the Shanghai Institution of Visual Arts College of Fudan University. He has won several prestigious international and domestic product design awards, including the Red Dot Award, A Design Award, Golden Pin Design Award, and IDSA International Design Award. 2018, he was also awarded the China Design Imagination Award - Most Popular Designer of The Year. Previously worked as a product and visual designer for well-known sports brands Nike and Adidas. He is now the co-founder of WY&P Holistic Design Consultancy and is recognized as a member of the Forbes Global Alliance in 2022. He holds multiple personal invention patents, new utility model patents, and appearance patents.

We are pleased to announce that Paul Nini has been nominated as the recipient of the 2024 UDA Medallion. Congratulations to him on this well-deserved honor!

Paul J. Nini is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Design at Ohio State University, retiring in 2024 after 33 years of service in roles including Department Chairperson, Graduate Studies Chair, Undergraduate Studies Chair, and Visual Communication Design program Coordinator. He’s also taught as a Visiting Lecturer at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of Cincinnati.

Paul’s writings have appeared in numerous publications (via AIGA, Allworth Press, Bloomsbury, de.Mo, Design Issues, Eye (UK), ico-D, Information Design Journal, and Princeton Architectural Press). He has presented at various national and international design and education conferences. He is a former member of AIGA’s Design Educators Community Steering Committee. He has also served on the editorial board of Communication Design: Interdisciplinary and Graphic Design Research and on the advisory board for AIGA’s Dialectic journal.

The Design Behaviors journal aims to establish a standard research methodology and terminology for all design disciplines.

The design is influenced by nature and the environment, shaping our understanding of our place in nature and the environment. It profoundly impacts our conscious and unconscious decisions, influencing what we know, what we buy, where we go, why we act, and reflecting our current position and future direction. Design can convey ideas of sustainability or transience based on its function and message, and it is perceived and interpreted through the five senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, and sound), as well as our emotions and concepts. Design is an intrinsic part of our identity, shaped by natural processes and intellectual endeavors such as theories and methodologies, defining the aesthetics and functionality of forms.

Design is not just art or science; it combines both, often called 'Art and science.' This has increased global recognition of the design field in graduate and Ph.D. programs. Our profession aims to develop and unify research methods and terminology within the design field, supported by selective programs worldwide. The Design Behaviors Journal seeks to share innovative and practical research methods globally to advance and unite the design discipline.

Congratulations! UDA is pleased to announce the 2024 Poster International Design Competition winners. Posters are a powerful way to communicate messages and tell stories through visual art. They encompass paintings and illustrations from the 19th and 20th centuries and hold cultural significance. The UDA’s annual design competition allows participants to showcase their best commercial posters for clients, experimental posters for creative projects, and environmental awareness posters promoting environmental preservation.
